Model Laboratory School Spring 2021 Information

Model Laboratory Schools resumed in-person instruction for Grades K-12 on Monday, January 4. Model continues to fulfill the requirements for in-person instruction as outlined by the Kentucky Department of Education (Guidance on Safety Expectations and Best Practices for Kentucky Schools).

Model is also offering elected remote instruction to students whose parent(s)/guardian(s) have health concerns in sending their student back to in-person instruction. This opportunity is being provided for students or families who may be included in the high-risk populations for COVID-19 or who may have other health concerns. Elected remote instrument instruction is not a day-to-day option; it is a semester-long option.

Model also remains committed to finding alternate working arrangements for any Model faculty/staff member who have or ever have health concerns.

According to the FDA, individuals who meet the following criteria are considered at high risk for contracting COVID-19:

  • Has a body mass index (BMI) greater than or equal to 35

  • Has chronic kidney disease

  • Has diabetes

  • Has immunosuppressive disease

  • Is currently receiving immunosuppressive treatment

  • Is 65 years of age or older OR

  • Is 55 years of age or older AND has

    • cardiovascular disease

    • Hypertension

    • chronic pulmonary disease/other chronic respiratory disease

Whether or Model faculty/staff members meet this criteria, they are still eligible to plan alternate work arrangements with Superintendent John Williamson.

Model will transition to school-wide nontraditional instruction (remote instruction) if:

1. There is an inability to provide educational services due to staffing.

2. Model receives a directive from the Governor’s Office, the Madison County Department of Public Health, or the Kentucky Department of Public Health.

Model reports the number of faculty/staff and students who report positive cases and individuals quarantining at the COVID-19 Dashboard Mondays - Fridays when school is in session by 7 p.m.

All Model faculty/staff members were given the option to register to take the COVID-19 vaccine as part Kentucky vaccination phase 1b. While advocating for both personal and campus-wide health, Model aligns with the University in maintaining its elective stance for vaccinations.
